Riđica is the northernmost settlement in the municipality of Sombor, in the West Bačka District of Serbia. It is only 2 km away from the state border with Hungary. The three sides of this village are surrounded by the borders. It is 30 km away from Sombor, and 8 km from the neighboring village of Stanišić. About a thousand inhabitants live in the village.
The tradition of growing vines in Riđica is several centuries old. The inhabitants of Riđica, which was first mentioned by its current name in Turkish cadastral registers from 1578 and 1591, were engaged in viticulture as early as the 16th and 17th centuries. The first more accurate archival data on the cultivation of vines in Riđica date from 1699, when, in the summary census of settlements in Bačka County, this village was listed with its 39 households, which, among other things, cultivated 12 “hoes” of vineyards (hoe is an old measure for a vineyard equal to 94 square fathoms — about 338 square meters)…
